When I work with people that are moving and downsizing, especially seniors, what they take with them and that they feel in control is very important.
Considerations arethe time frame, family involvement, budget and the person’s ability or desire to be involved.
Each move is different so, I create a plan specific to their needs.
In this situation, the gentleman’s wife passed away the year prior and he decided that he would move to another city where his adult children resided.
First, we needed to get the home ready for sale. The home showed well on the interior so needed little work.
The garage was full, the doors needed painting, property maintenance, junk removal and yard clean-up. I got started with the Fresh Start Program and contracted in the necessary folks to get all the work done. The house sold quickly.
Then the 2nd call to prepare for the move.
The entire home was downsized as he was moving to an apartment with less than half the space. I arranged for the sale of the excess furnishings with a company who arrived with their crew to remove the items.
The house was purged. Good items taken to local charities, hazardous waste taken to the appropriate site. And recycling bins dragged to the curb.
Expired food tossed. Good food items were packed and taken to the food bank.
The client wanted to be somewhat involved hands-on so I had him sort through his personal documents shredding and recycling those no longer needed. He tagged the furnishings for sale from the list we created. These were things he could do easily while I dealt with all the other household items and packing.
I arranged for 3 moving companies to give quotes but I coach my clients through this process. In this case he had artefacts from around the world in which he and his wife had created memories from. One company was very thorough in their estimate. The second was adequate and the 3rd company came in significantly less… to the point that the client remarked, “it made the hair stand on the back of my neck”. Over lunch his good friend said to him go with the cheapest company, “what can they possibly do - its just stuff”. At this remark we chatted. The gentleman could go back to India and re-purchase the items, but he could never re-create the memories of sitting with his wife in front of the Tajmahal.
I get to know my clients, listen to their stories and I guide them through a process of decision making in this life transition.
In this case I had to return the keys to the lawyer before the house closing. I arranged for the cleaners to go in and give the house a thorough clean for the new home owners. The owner of the cleaning company took some photos that I could send to the clientto show that we delivered on our promise.
I checked the house, locked it up and then went to the lawyer’s office.
